A decade of excellence in university placement

KYUEM 2022 Oxford and Cambridge conditional offer holders.

KOLEJ Yayasan UEM (KYUEM) is proud of its students’ academic achievements in the Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) A-Levels; which are globally recognized as a gold standard in education and internationally transferable.

This is put to the test every year as senior students apply for degree courses in the UK, US, Australia and elsewhere.

This defines A-Levels as a platform for entrance to higher education or a career.

Over the past 10 years, KYUEM has bid farewell to 2,402 graduating students, with 2,160 (89.9%) securing unconditional/guaranteed placements at overseas universities upon publication of their A-Level results every August. This remarkable success should be viewed in context – the vast majority of its graduates apply to highly ranked universities, such as those of the Russell group in the UK, the Ivy League and other top 25 universities in the US and the Group of 8 in Australia .

The UK remains the most popular destination for KYUEM graduates with 66 of its alumni between 2012 and 2021 accepted by either Oxford or Cambridge while 487 secured placements at Imperial College London, London School of Economics or University College London.

Over the same 10-year period, 64 seniors were accepted by highly prestigious Irish universities such as the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, University College Cork and the National University of Ireland, Galway.

At KYUEM, it is important that students are exposed to a range of higher education possibilities and destinations that offer contrasting social and cultural opportunities. To meet the requirements of its university aspirants over the years, the institution has also assisted them in their applications to Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore, as well as multiple countries in Europe.

In recent times, it has felt an increasing number of students to the US. Over the last six years, these students have aimed high, with 73% of applicants targeting the top 25 universities in the US, including the University of California, Los Angeles, the University of California, Berkeley, and the Universities of Stanford, Chicago, Caltech and MIT.

From 2016 to 2021, 90 out of 162 students received 157 US conditional offers, 25 of which were from Ivy League universities including the Universities of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell and Pennsylvania.

Since 2012, 26 of its graduates have been elected to study in the G8 universities of Australia, notably the Australian National University and the Universities of Queensland and Melbourne.

To maximize students’ chances of success, KYUEM’s University Relations Office provides ongoing advice and instruction. Internal and external training are given through workshops and webinars concerning all stages of the application process. Specific issues such as personal statement and essay writing are addressed, as are admissions tests and practice interview technique. Alumni engagement sessions also help to prepare students for study overseas and gain insights into the professional life that awaits them.

A number of KYUEM graduates choose to embark upon higher education here in Malaysia. Local foreign universities offer twinning programmes, including the University of Nottingham, Reading, Herriot Watt, Southampton, Monash and Newcastle University of Medicine, Malaysia.

Highly regarded local public (IPTA) universities such as UM, UKM and USM are popular choices, as are private (IPTS) universities such as IMU and UTP.

At this critical stage of a young person’s life, guidance and support is of great importance – KYUEM places great value in progress and continuity and is students’ stepping stone to top international universities.
