An English teacher’s kindness leaves an impact that goes beyond words

Like everyone else, my first English writing assignment came when I was a young child in school.

But here’s what made my first assignment so unique: English was my second language, and it was the third language, at best, of my parents. So it wasn’t until I attended school that I realized that I would actually have to master English, and that I would need to both write and speak it well.

I realize now that my first English writing assignment was a defining moment in my life. If I had been in a class with a poor teacher – or simply one who had a bias against the children of immigrants – I would have likely been deemed a pupil with ‘a learning disability.” I would have been written off by that teacher, and I would have been doomed to years of discouragement in the classroom.
