Duke Falls to NC State, 13-5

DURHAM – The Duke baseball team fell to NC State, 13-5, on Saturday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field.

NC State (32-16, 14-11 ACC) scored nine unanswered runs from the fourth inning through the seventh to pull away from Duke (20-29, 9-17 ACC) and captured the series.

Junior Chad Knight and sophomore Luke Storm led Duke offensively with multi-hit days. Knight finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Storm went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs.

rookie southpaw Jonathan Santucci started on the bump for the Blue Devils. After an hour delay pregame, Santucci threw one pitch before another delay, this time 51 minutes. The Leominster, Mass., native allowed three runs, one earned, on three hits and three walks while striking out one in an inning of work. Matt Willadsen started for the Wolfpack and allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks while fanning four in seven innings pitched.

The Wolfpack scored first, taking a 3-0 lead in the second inning on two hits and an error. Despite surrendering three runs, Duke was able to escape out of jams in the first and third, stranding the bases loaded.

The Blue Devils got on the board and tied the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the third inning. freshmen Andrew Yu and alex mooney reached base on a hit by pitch and walk, respectively, to put runners on first and second with no outs. After both runners advanced a base via a fly out and a wild pitch, Knight brought the pair home with a single to left field. Storm accounted for the third run of the inning, hitting an RBI double to score Knight.

NC State retooled the lead in the top of the fourth inning, scoring on a squeeze bunt. The Wolfpack extended its lead to 12-3 by scoring four runs on four hits in the fifth and four runs on two hits in the seventh.

Duke scored a pair of two-out runs in the eighth inning to cut into the deficit, 12-5. graduate student Chris Davis drew a walk and classmate Chris Crabtree hit a single to left center. Storm brought both home with an automatic double.

The Wolfpack added another at the top of the ninth with a sacrifice fly to bring the game’s final score, 13-5.

Duke and NC State wrap up the series on Sunday at Jack Coombs Field. First pitch is slated for 1 pm, but fans are encouraged to arrive early for the Senior Day ceremony at 12:35 pm
