Extra-Inning Defeat in Finale – University of Houston Athletics

GREENVILLE, NC – The University of Houston saw its late lead slip away as No. 21 East Carolina walked off the Cougars in the 10th inning for a 3-2 victory in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon from Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

With the loss, Houston (34-22, 11-10 American) turns its focus to Tuesday’s TicketSmarter American Athletic Conference Baseball Championship where it will compete as the No. 3 seed and face No. 6-seed Wichita State. The victory was East Carolina’s (38-18, 20-4 American) 14th straight, the nation’s longest active win streak. The Pirates will be the top seed in the tournament.

After a one-out double from junior Lane Hoover in the 10th inning, senior Bryson Worrell drove in the game-winner with an RBI-single. houston redshirt junior Maddux Miller (3-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing one run on two hits in 0.1 innings.

Houston’s bottom four batters in the order contributed six hits highlighted by sophomore eight-hole hitter samuel benjamin who drove in a pair of runs. Six Cougar pitchers combined to limit the Pirates to 4 for 17 (.235) with runners and 1 for 9 (.111) with two outs.

Houston maintained a 2-1 lead through four straight innings before East Carolina used consecutive one-out doubles to the tie the game at two-all in the eighth. Freshman Jacob Jenkins-Cowart laced a run-scoring two-bagger into left field, plating Worrell.

Houston used three hits, including a two-out, two-run single from Benjamin to take a 2-0 lead in the second inning. The multi-RBI performance was the second on the season for Benjamin and first since March 29 against Prairie View.

The Pirates had their opportunities earlier, stranding two runners in the first and third innings. Cougar freshman starter Malachi Lott allowed one run on one hit with two walks and a strikeout in two innings. At the plate, I have added a hit and run.


Houston opens the TicketSmarter American Athletic Conference Baseball Championship as the No. 3 seed from Clearwater, Fla. The Cougars will face No. 6-seed Wichita State on Tuesday night with first pitch set for 47 minutes following the 3 pm CT Game 3.
