UT Advances To Red Bull USA 3X Quarterfinals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Tennessee won all three of its games on Saturday and advanced to the women’s division quarterfinal round at the 2022 Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Nationals at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

After dropping their opening contest to Iowa State on Friday night, 21-13, the Lady Vols rebounded to defeat Hoopers NY, 14-11; Athletes Unlimited, 21-18; and the University of North Carolina, 18-13; on Saturday to set up a date with Stanford. The Big Orange and Cardinal will meet at 10:50 am ET on Sunday at the Hall of Fame’s Jerry Colangelo Court of Dreams, located in the heart of the Museum. If UT continues to advance, the semifinal contest would take place at 12:10 pm, followed by the championship tilt at 1:20 pm

In its final game of the day on Saturday, Tennessee jumped out to a 3-0 lead on North Carolina and never trailed. Tamari Key led the charge, tossing in six points, followed by Sarah Puckett withfive, kaiya wynn with four and jordan walker with three.

Walker, Key and Wynn hit consecutive buckets to open the contest, but UNC responded and tied the game on three different occasions before the Lady Vols began to pull away. A two from Walker, a layup and free throw from Key and a two from Puckett bumped the UT lead to five, 12-7. The Tar Heels fought back and cut the gap to 13-11, but a layup from Wynn, a two from Puckett and a pair of buckets from Key gave the Lady Vols a safe buffer until time expired.

Earlier Saturday evening, Tennessee closed out Pool C play by coming from four-down to topple Athletes Unlimited, 21-18, and finish pool play at 2-1. Puckett and Walker paced the Big Orange attack with eight points each, while Wynn added three and Key two.

After UT fell behind 7-3, Puckett helped her squad pull within one at 10-9 with three two-pointers. A layup from Key and a free throw by Walker finally pushed Tennessee in front, 11-10. A Wynn two-pointer and Puckett’s fourth two-ball of the contest boosted UT’s cushion to 16-12.

Athletes Unlimited rallied and twice cut the gap to one in the closing minutes, but a Wynn jumper and four points from Walker on a free throw, two-pointer and layup held off the opposition and clinched the victory.

The Lady Vols began the day with a 14-11 victory over Hoopers NY, getting seven points from Key and four from Walker. Wynn added two points, while Puckett added a point and four assists for the victors.

In a contest in which UT never trailed, the Lady Vols held a 10-9 advantage before Walker’s two-point long-range bucket gave her team its biggest lead at 12-9. HNY responded with a point before Wynn hit a shot on a pass from Walker, and then Puckett added a free throw to make it 14-10 with less than a minute to play. Hoopers NY responded with one final tally before the buzzer sounded to account for the final score.

Played on a half court with a 10-minute clock and a 12-second shot clock, the first team to 21 points, or the team in the lead at the end of regulation, is the winner. Free throws and field goals count as one point, and shots made beyond the traditional three-point arc count as twos.
