Wheeling, W. Va. – While we are still four months away from the start of football season, the excitement is brewing at Wheeling University for the boys of fall. They are currently going through their spring ball schedule, but on Wednesday the team released their 2022 schedule. There are six exciting home games against Mountain East Conference (MEC) opponents including Glenville State the University of Charleston, and the first-ever home game against UNC Pembroke.
The 2021 season was a year of firsts and memorable moments for the Cardinals as they finished the year with the best record in program history at 5-6, 5-5 in MEC play, highlighted by some big-time moments. The leader of them all came on Homecoming 2021 when they scored a 26-20 victory over rival West Liberty. They also picked up their first shutout victory in program history and finished seventh in the MEC, their highest full season ranking in program history. head-coach zack bruney enters his fourth season as head coach and brings back a roster that has plenty of experience behind it.
While the team had some highlight moments throughout the year, so did some of its individual players as the program continues to grow. Sy Alli IV became the first 1,000-yard rusher in program history when he led the MEC with 1,014 yards this past season and an average of 92.8 yards per game. Alli has improved on his season total in rushing yards in each of his three seasons with the program and looks to continue to expound upon that this coming season. On the defensive side of the ball, Ryan Gorman finished second in program history with 75 tackles during the season and defensive lineman Brandon Munoz set the new single-season sack record at Wheeling with 7.0.
Looking ahead to the 2022 season, Wheeling will play six home games beginning on September 1st and running through the final game of the season on November 12th. They open things up with a non-conference Thursday night matchup against Seton Hill in a rematch of their non-conference game from a year ago. They then hit the road for two straight weeks as they head to Notre Dame (Sept. 10th) and Alderson Broaddus (Sept. 17th). They round out September with a home game against Glenville State on September 24th, before beginning October with a road trip to West Virginia Wesleyan on October 1st.
After playing just two home games through the month of September and early October, the Cardinals ramp things back up with four of their final six games being played at home. Week six will give Wheeling fans their first live look at UNC Pembroke on October 8th and the Cardinals will be back home the following week against Frostburg State on October 15th. Wheeling will then hit the road for the final time in 2022 when they head to West Liberty (October 22nd) and Concord (October 29th). They wrap up the season at home against The University of Charleston on November 5th, and then will celebrate their seniors on November 12th for their final game against Fairmont State.
